I am a 6th grade teacher in the High Desert and have had great success with Whole Brain Teaching. Is there anyone else doing Whole Brain Teaching in the High Desert?

I just heard about Whole Brain Teaching on Wednesday night. I am a credentialing/master's student at Chapman in Victorville and a long term sub for VVUHSD. When I first saw this on TeacherTube I thought it was incredibly stupid and would not work at all for high school students. After thinking about it for a while though I have come up with some ideas for the older students. I don't know very much about the Whole Brain Teaching yet but would definitely like to learn more and collaborate with others who are interested in using this method.

I am also a teacher in the high desert. I have been using Whole Brain teaching in my classroom for about a year now and I am amazed at how well it works.

Hi I am a second grade teacher and I began using Whole Brain Teaching two months ago. It works great with my students. There are five teachers in Victor Elementary School District that are becoming trainers. There is also a conference on April 18. Try this it works well. The kids are motivated and excited. you can email me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

I'm in Desert Hot Springs- is that considered "high desert"? (I just moved here in September and think it's all desert so far). Very excited for the conference on the 18th!

Hi

I think that technically you are in the Low Desert..... but the desert people can all stick together. I am in Victorville. You are about an hour and half away. Just try a few things first, you cannot do it all right away. Class yes score board rules and teach OK. Did you watch the online videos? Watch a few times you pick up more each time.

Hi Bratzki,
I am a high school teacher in Hemet and Whole Brain Teaching does work with high school kids. I do not use all elements, but the "Class-Yes", "Teach-Okay," and gestures are amazing! I really like WBT because I think it forces the students (and the teacher) to be active participants during class. My best advice for incorporating WBT into high school classes is to tell the students why you are going to use WBT teaching. In my room I have a poster that says:
We learn

10% What we READ
20% What we HEAR
30% What we SEE
50% What we SEE and HEAR
70% What we DISCUSSED with OTHERS
80% What we EXPERIENCED PERSONALLY
95% What we TEACH TO SOMEONE ELSE

I told my students that WBT uses more of their senses than just hearing and that will help them to learn better. I also tell them that it might seem kind of silly, but that's okay because math is fun! I think that admitting to your students that what you are about to do might seem strange and different helps them to understand (1) that they are going to do it because it will help them learn and (2) that they don't need to complain about it being silly because you already know that it is supposed to seem silly at first. Well, I hope this is helpful.

I'm looking forward to trying some of these strategies. Right now I'm doing a long term sub assignment in a mild/moderate SDC class and I'm wondering if I should try WBT on these students. I would definitely like to attend a conference or observe a teacher who is currently using it to get a better idea of how and where to begin. Thank you for the info you posted on the gestures and ways we learn.
