Well, you're talkin' to the right guy! I've experimented with the Scoreboard for 10 years with my community college students. This semester, with great success, I'm using extra credit points. When they're on task, working hard, using the teach/okay with GREAT ENERGY ... then the whole class gets an extra credit point on the Scoreboard. When things aren't going well, then the whole class gets one point Dextra Credit (one point subtracted from Extra Credit). I tell them honestly that the game will be close, rarely if ever will the score differential be greater than 3 points. What I don't say is that the course is set up with more than 1,000 points for traditional work ... so the 20-30 points the class as a whole might earn by the end of the semester will not greatly change anyone's final grade ... but frankly, I'd be happy to raise everyone's grade a bit with extra credit in exchange for hard work every class period ... for variety I change the Scoreboard to 1 page more or 1 page less of reading ... I never give them the reward of leaving early. Eventually, I add the Guff Counter ... fully described in the downloads. The total number of Extra Credit plus Dextra Credit points in a 50 minute period is usually 6 to 10.
