TOPIC: A newbie with startup questions

A newbie with startup questions 2 years, 10 months ago #1447

Hi, I'm a 3rd grade teacher, and I just recently discovered the WBT method. It sounds great and I hope I can successfully implement it this coming school year. I understand the class-yes and the 5 rules but I'm still foggy on the procedure of teach-ok. is this a process of the students simply repeating to each other exactly what you just taught?

For example...
Teacher: "a noun is a word that names a person, place or thing. now teach-ok"
Student 1 to student 2: "a noun is a word that names a person, place or thing."

Or is it suppose to be more of a student "discussion" about the taught rule or concept.

example....
Teacher: "A noun is word that names a person, place or thing. now teach-ok"
Student 1: "The word desk is a noun that names a thing."
Student 2: "Nouns that name people need capital letters."

Any clarification would be great.
Kathy

In a intial esson about nouns, your students would begin by teaching each other that a noun is a person, place, or thing. Remember to use gestures. You could always have your students teach examples later in the lesson.

Hi--If you say, "A noun is a person (point to yourself), place (point to a map) or thing (point to a desk)" and have the students mirror your motions first, then do the Teach Okay, it will work great. Yes, do small bits and have them mirror your motions before you ask them to teach each other. If you are adding several small teaching parts (like nouns, proper nouns, etc.) have them repeat the first things you taught AND the new information, so they are practicing the information multiple times both verbally and physically. Does this help? I hope so! Good luck!

Well, that would depend on the objective of the lesson. If you are introducing and teaching the meaning of "nouns", have the students repeat the meaning to each other. If an introduction to nouns has already been presented and students comprehend the meaning you may choose to discuss nouns and allow the students to provide examples to each other, which may require discussion (have them create gestures)
people... (have students turn to partners and name 5 people at school..principal,friend,)
places (5)... (in the neighborhood or community)
things (5)... (around the classroom)
This may help identify students that may not quite understand the concept and allow peers to assist or guide them.
