Last year I had some really difficult students who would get angry and shut down or not want to participate or work in groups! I'm new to WBT and anxious to try it out just wondering what I do about these kinds of kids in my classroom. Also, with the group coming up one of them is a crier big time! I teach third grade and am departmentalized. Any suggestions for kids who get angry when corrected or those who fight would be great!

I'm not sure of how much you've read or seen with Whole Brain Teaching, but we have 6 different levels of classroom management skills that deal with these types of students. First and foremost, our levels and procedures strive to change the culture of a classroom by making EVERYTHING (or as much as humanly possible) positive. From the class rules to how we pass out papers; it's intended to hit the limbic system of our students.

I can answer with more precise answers if I knew what you have and haven't read or used with WBT.

I'd be happy to help out in any way possible.

I just started reading about WBT. I teach kindergarten. I started school 2 weeks ago. There is one student that I can not control his talking, noise making, poking or movement (spinning, jumping, hopping) in class. I read about the BULL EYE game a few minutes ago and I will try it. I wonder if I could play this game every half an hour with this one student. What do you think?
What else could I use?

I think if you started with the rules and scoreboard game you would get a way different feeling in your classroom. Students realize very quickly their actions have a reaction. Like with the scoreboard game they get a might oh yah! or mighty groan! When I used this with my summer school students I noticed they were happier and recognized that I and the class valued their behavior with the games, woos, and mighty oh yahs!

Thanks!
I will start again. What do you do when students hit and pinch each other really hard?
I hate writing referrals to the principal so early in the year.

This will be my first year to use WBT in the classroom so I think it will solve a lot of problems. I have seen alot of the videos and love them! They are very motivating! I have read "Teaching Challenging Elementary School Students" and currently reading "Industrial Strength Power Teaching." I have downloaded the classroom management signs and also I believe your one on the practice cards. I'm anxious to try out WBT when we start school on Aug. 24th I think it will make a big difference. I'm just a little anxious working with students who have attitudes, get angry when corrected, have ODD or are chronic criers. I want to be able to handle these situations better than last year for myself and my students. I appreciate your help!

The six levels are as follows:
level 1: scoreboard game
level 2: practice card system
level 3: the guff counter
level 4: independents
level 5: bull's eye game
level 6: agreement bridge

Levels 1 and 2 will manage 90% of your class. The following levels are intended to deal with those challenging students we all worry about; one level at a time. Obviously, you want to space these out as much as possible, that way you won't lose your bag of tricks the first week.

Also, little things like: it's cool, woo, personal/class records, and volume-o-meter will pay huge dividends for ALL of your kids. The goal is to create a "no fear" classroom where kids have a unique safe haven.

Sfritsch, where are you located?

Pinching and hitting are in direct violation of rule 5: Keep your dear teacher happy. Make them practice things that promote strong character. Instead of referrals, attempt to try a completely different approach. Communicate why it's important to make smart choices, and don't dwell on the negative thing(s) being done in class. If it becomes a constant battle, then those kids can move to the independents/bull's eye/ and agreement bridge.

I'm looking for suggestions also in how to deal with students whose response to you on their behavior is "What, what did I do?". They don't want to be responsible for their actions. Last year I also had problems with them not bringing back parental notes signed so I'm wondering how that will work with the practice cards and practicing at home. I look forward to starting WBT on Aug. 24th! I'm just preparing for some scenarios that happened to me last year!
