TOPIC: Visual for my "independents"

Visual for my "independents" 11 months, 3 weeks ago #5900

Since I started WBT so late in the year (end of March) I never ended up adding the No Guff, practice cards, etc. I've implemented a little bit here and there by emailing parents and explaining which rule their child continued to break over and over and over and asked if they could repeat it at home. But nothing structured like the Ebook calls for. Maybe next year..

What I did today (and it's an OLD trick and I should've used it sooner) was put popsicle sticks on a kid's desk. Let's call him Chris. Yesterday he practiced OVER and OVER and OVER rule #3...when he came to school today before he even put away his stuff we chatted about how he was going to follow rule #3...and within five minutes he was out of his seat. I gave him 3 popsicle sticks with his name on them. He put them on his desk. Any time he broke rule #3 he had to give me a stick. I took ONE stick away the WHOLE day! The day went VERY smooth for him. I told him if I had to take away 3 sticks that he owed me 3 minutes of practicing and a letter to dad that he had to write telling which rule he would practice over the weekend.

I think more kids might get some sticks of their own. With only 6.5 days left of school. =)

Megan, that is an excellent move! Great job. WBT is so useful because clever teachers are able to use the flexibility of the system to their advantage.

Hey Megan!I love that tweak! Very tangible for kiddos that need it (which those independents certainly do!)
Ten finger woooo to you!!!!

Megan,

I love that idea! When you took the one popsicle stick away from your student, did he have to practice the rule 3 for one minute, or was that more of a reminder for him? (I know students who would push that and lose two popsicle sticks just because they could before they had to have "real" consquences.)
