Hello Everyone,

So excited to have found this website and way of teaching. I just for my first teaching job in 4th grade. I did my student teaching 2 years ago in 2nd grade. So a little bit of a change. I am nervous about everything I need to do to get my room set up so it runs smoothly. I really would like to do WBT. I am just kinda nervous and over whelmed. I have been reading and watching the videos and will continue to do so. So any advice or suggestions you can give me would be great. Anything that I need to get for my classroom, students, organizational ideas, lesson planning? anything, everything..... thanks so much!

I experienced the same thing last year when I began my first year of teaching. I would say to start with what you feel comfortable. For me, I began the year with the 5 rules, lines, papers, and seats. As the year progressed and began to feel more comfortable with those things I added teach ok. This year I am going to do all of those things, as well as the 5 part lesson format and all of the power pix. I am so excited about this upcoming year. I also started a blog, so if you would like to follow my whole brain teaching journey the address is www.ramseyresources.blogspot.com.

Good Luck! I know you will be awesome, and you will see that whole brain teaching will help you reach teacher heaven!!!

I fully implemented WBT in my classroom last year. I started with Class/Yes (attention getter) first off. I just told my kiddos when they heard me say, "Class" or any variation of class, for example, "Classity," they would answer with "Yes" or "Yessity." I then taught them the 5 classroom rules using WBT by introducing the Teach/Okay. If you introduce WBT to them by using WBT they will pick it up really quick, at least my 3rd graders did. Then, you've introduced Class/Yes, Teach/Okay, and the 5 classroom rules. I also introduced the scoreboard early on, because this will get the majority of your students on board. As you're introducing the rules, you can also introduce Mirror, Hands and Eyes and Switch. So now, you've introduced the Big 7 of Whole Brain Teaching. Everything else will fall into place as far as incorporating the PowerPix, the games, and so much more. There are lots of blogs out there that you can follow to get more great ideas, and the forum is one of the best tools that I have found! Keep with it! You'll love WBT and all it brings to your classroom!

Thanks,

Welcome to WBT, oki girl,

Staci & Georgia are right on when they say to start with what is comfortable to you. Like Staci, I implemented the Big 7 early on with my 5th graders. It may seem overwhelming at first, but it will all fall into place as you begin to use it.

Like the other ladies said, the forum is an excellent resource tool, you can get so many great responses from different people. Also, the WBT for Challenging Kids & the WBT Model Classroom ebooks are great resources that can help as well.

I can't wait to hear about your upcoming school year!

I can only add that believe everything you read, watch the videos and ask, ask, we are here to help you. I am a veteran teacher and I get very nervous every school year. When I first started WBT I was both scared and excited
And I made mistakes. My biggest advice is take it slow. As a new teacher you have a lot to get comfortable with, but class management is going to be your biggest success using the basic foundations of WbT will assure you that success. I have told young teachers the two most important things are organization and classroom cconsistant management.
Keep smiling and power to the teachers
Annette

Thanks so much for all the advice. I have also enjoyed reading your blogs. I know it will all come together. Right now it just seems like a huge mountain to climb. I will be asking lots of questions for sure.

When I first started WBT I made a list of the “First Steps” and posted it on my board and had a copy beside my book. I did this so I would not forget to do them!!! It seemed like so many things to remember…
I would diffidently say you should start off full force. The first days of school are so important. These days are made for introducing the rules, procedures, and routines. It also helped me to print out the Scoreboard information and align it with my consequences. This way, I knew when it was time to add students to Independents or work with Practice Cards.

I’m going to upload a video of my WBT binder and classroom procedures later next week. If you want to, check it out.

Good luck,
