Just a note to let everyone know how much success I'm having increasing my students fluency using Super Speed 1,000. Every semester we test the fluency of students using an assessment called Dibels. I can't wait for the next test to see the look on the reading specialist's faces when my student's fluency numbers jump! I could see this having incredible gains for ELL students.

That's awesome! I actually just made enough copies of the super speed for all my ESL students. Would you start 3rd graders in 100 or 1000? Is there a recommended starting place for each grade? If not, how do I determine where I begin for all my different grades?

Diane, Super Speed 100 is intended for K-3. If your students can successfully complete all words in Level 100 in 60 seconds or less then they are probably ready to move on to Super Speed 1,000. You may find that they struggle somewhat, but pair up a stronger reader with a weaker reader. Also, Super Speed 100 and 1,000 will give your students that feeling of achievement as they pass personal goals. Be sure to celebrate these successes! Read the complete downloads for more in depth information.

rhopple, I can't wait to hear about your DIBELS score jumps.
We also use DIBELS. Last year I used another program to try to increase reading fluency. I did not feel that it was as successful as I would have hoped considering all the teacher time that it took away from other subjects.
Would you think that I could use Super Speed 100 for around four weeks and see any jumps in DIBELS?

Although I don't have any concrete evidence to suggest to you that 4 weeks will show improvement I can tell you that if you use it consistantly over that time period I would be shocked if you didn't see improvement. I use it for 10 minutes at the end of every RTI class. As I walk around and listen to students I can certainly see and hear improvement. Don't forget to allow your 1's and 2's to switch who goes first after each round. That way each student will be exposed to all the words. I'll let you know what the fluency score results show after the next test. Good luck and let me know if you have any questions.
