TOPIC: Super Improver wall

Super Improver wall 8 months, 3 weeks ago #7926

Soooo - I read through the model classroom today and read about the super improver wall. However, I read somewhere else about it (don't remember where) and I could swear it mentioned different color papers...? The one in the model classroom doesn't mention that.

Also - is there an estimated time frame on how long it should take for the first kid to reach 10 stars? Is there a certain time in the year that EVERYONE has their card on the wall??

Megan, I am going to start everyone with their name on the wall, on a card (star, actually)of the lowest color. Since there are something like ten color levels they might as well start at the beginning of the first one. And with ten stars per level and ten or so levels, I would try to move kids up a level in three to four weeks.

So, does Hillsboro start next Tuesday like David Douglas?

Megan,
I started looking the first week, by the second week I started putting up stars. The color-code or order is as follows:
start with:
white
blue
green
red
orange
yellow
purple
bronze
silver
gold

Also,
remember that it is a long year. However, you want to recognize their improvement on both Super speed Math and Reading:cheer:

this Megan, I think this is what you read.

That's the format I'm using, except my OCD forces me to put the colors in rainbow order: white, then red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple, then bronze, silver and gold.

EDIT:
I have a question/request: Does anyone have some sort of chart or log they've created that can be used to track kids' records? I figure it probably needs spaces for each of the levels in SuperSpeed Math and 1000, not to mention test score records, etc.

I don't, but you've inspired me to make one. I'll probably just use Excel, then you could produce graphs!

I'll post it once I've made it!

Thanks everyone!
So here is my plan:
Start EVERYONE on white with their name on the paper. So day 1 they are all up on the wall.

Next question: When does the photo w/ a friend happen?

I also have a Super Improvers Wall ready to go. My plan, (although I tweak it daily), is to use the colors of the rainbow. Everyone starts off with a white star with their name (I used star die cuts), when they have shown improvement I will add a star sticker to their star, when they receive 10 stickers I'll add another big star to show the progression to the next level (red) and start again. I also have a color code progression chart posted. I'm thinking I might have to overlap the big stars due to space.

Loonie!
You will love the Super Improvers wall! It is key, with respect to getting your fence sitters over to the supremo side! I have had so much success with this wall. Also, keep in mind that there are various levels that a student will graduate to as they advance in their SuperSpeed Reading an Super Speed Math Scores. Let me know what you think, once you have had a chance to look it over:cheer:

The photo with a friend happens at the end of the fourth level (40 stars). Then the photo is taken, but turned with the image side to the wall. The student then needs to earn 5 stars on the back of the photo before the photo is turned around for all to see.

There was a webinar on this topic. You should check it out. It really explained a lot.

Good luck,

Educ8rKP,

Here are the logs for SS Math that our Reading Coach created at our school. There are 3 tabs at the bottom (K-1, 2, 3-5).

I hope this helps.

EDIT: Ok, I can't add it...the excel document doesn't have an allowable extension. If you'd like it, you can send me your email & I'll email you a copy!

Oh, I hit a big what you call E-pif... anyway, I took the kids cards off the improver wall and had them tell me if they thought if they were in front of them it would work better. They in their adorable way said "yes". So I said, here you go, make a tent out of it and hang it on your book basket. When you have trouble with a rule remember to catch a star and circle that number of stars you already have. So if you broke rule two, circle two stars on your card, if you have none then write a two so you know you need to earn two, if it is personal put a big P.

Bazanga, it worked. We had more kids get to planet one today than in weeks. Oh, I am giving myself an ten finger wooooooo.

Hello Ms. Norton,

I am hoping to obtaining a copy of the SS and Math log that can be used to track the kids' records. You replied in a posting your schools reading coach made them, but could not post the WBT website. I WOULD LOVE a copy!!!!!

Thanks,

Karri CLampitt

I wish you all could see how Staci Glass as handled the Super Improvers Wall. I was telling her how at one of my buildings, I had let each child choose a color paper for me to write their name one. Then we were putting 10 stars, all the same color, up as they earned them. Once they earned 10, then we would switch colored stars to move up to the next level. (I was trying to find a way to do this without having an actual classroom). Then Staci developed a color coded page. She ran it on card stock. It basically looks like a striped page. There are 10 colored stripes going up the page with a spot at the top for the students name. Each strip is named; for example, Brilliant Blue. The students earn their stars and place them on the level that they are working on. When they have 10 stars on the "Brilliant Blue" stripe (level), then they move up to "sparkling white". I have adopted her idea. I have a page for each student I work with. I keep them filed in a little box that I carry on my cart. If I have students beat a Super Speed record, then they get to put a star on their card. They are loving this!! Even the fifth graders want to try to beat their records so they can get a star. Everyday, I am hearing things like, "I need two more stars, then I get to move up a level." It is great!!

I took a photo of the Super Improver cards I'm using with my small groups. They were Staci Glass' design. They are working great for me!!!
