Hi there!

I know that one of the big issues for importing Whole Brain Teaching into Spain is the language. The English level in Spain is not very high, and there are a lot of teachers who cannot access the information.

In fact, if I'm not wrong, most of the Spanish teachers approaching this method are related to the teaching of English as a foreign language.

If there are other Spanish Whole Brain Teachers around, do you think we could do something to spread WBT in our territory?

One of the things we have done (from Tarragona and Reus) is writing an article (with the help of the WBT community) for "Cuadernos de pedagogía", which we'll be sending at the end of this month, but we still don't know if it will be published. Any other ideas?

Best,

Edward

Hi Edward! How are you doing?...

Well, it seems you have been working with the Whole Brain Teaching method for a long time and so you have experience...I discovered Whole Brain Teaching two months ago when I was watching English classes over the Internet (youtube)...I think this method is great but I had to email Jay 'cause I didnt know how introduce it in my EFL class...I needed some advice and he helped me a lot...He's great!

I was in hospital last month and I went back to work at the beginning of this month so I made an attempt at Whole Brain Teaching last week. I made some flashcards and explained to my pupils class/yes and teach/ok (in Spanish) and then we were practicing in English...I play with them an action game so as they are familiarized with some instructions (stand up, sit down, jump, run on the spot, walk around, fly, etc) I explained the "teach your partner/switch" emphasizing the use of gestures...they loved it and they were very motivated.

The point is that these days school is veryyyy crazy with many different performances and acts for the end of the year party...Besides, I'm also pretty busy with my oposiciones (I think you know what I mean)...So I will work on this deeply when I finish my exams...I want to make my own classroom rules pictures and flashcards related to the topics we usually deal with in the English class. And I would like to learn more about WBT. I took a look at your website and well...I am looking forward to reading that article on the "Cuadernos de Pedagogía"...and let me know everything you do with respect to WBT up there...It will be a pleasure to share my ideas too.

Thanks.

PS: are you Spanish?

Hey Paola!

I'm doing fine! A lot of work and study, but fine!

I'm not such an expert on Whole Brain Teaching. I started studying it at the end of last year, and I have only been able to apply it for a couple of months (now I'm on a "paternity" leave...).

I'm happy to know you went back to school after hospital. Work is always a good therapy...

I hope we will finish the article by the end of the month, and we'll send it to the magazine. Let's hope they publish it!

About me being Spanish, I'm half-Spanish, half-American, but I've always been living in Spain.

Feel free to join the wikispace (we can change its name to powerteachersinspain so we can grasp more people...

Read you soon,

Edward

PS: How's life in Ceuta? I don't know much about the city, I should say...

I would like to give a warm welcome to Lukas, my partner here in Tarragona.

As he doesn't speak English, I reckon we'll have to continue this thread in Spanish so he can follow us...

Bienvenido, Lukas.

Tabla de Puntuaciones Puntos Positivos 2 years, 11 months ago #1272

Hey Lukas!

One of the things I like to give prizes to (before and after starting to use WBT) is having a classmate help another classmate not expecting anything in return. Those little altruistic details should be prized so they can be repeated more often, which is very necessary nowadays.

Another example could be telling the students: "I have to give out these papers (you put them on the table). When I say "Distribute!", you will answer "OK!". Each of you will stand up and take one paper. ONLY ONE PER PERSON. Leave the rest of the papers in a nice pile and go back to your seats. If you can do all that in less than 30 seconds, I'll grant you with a smiley face, but if it takes you more than 45 seconds, I'll grant you with a frowny face. Distribute!

The other things I give prizes to, we have already talked about them: energy, interet, following the rules... and, taking into account that the scoreboard is fixed, whenever you want them to win, look for excuses to give them smileys, and if the excuses and smileys are given because of the not-very-motivated or the conflictive students, the better. You will raise their self-esteem and you will make them more willing to participate in your class.

Best,

Edward
