Hello!

How does WBT work with students that are autistic and noise levels are triggers for some. Have any other teachers had students like this in class before and if so, what modifications to WBT have you made, so every student is successful with the strategies?

Thanks,

Hi,

I haven't had to make many modifications to WBT for student's with autism. WBT is tailored for students with autism. Often the assistant with work with my autistic student depending on where they are on the autism spectrum. As for noise level, I train my class to speak and respond clearly but at a low noise level. Check out my blog for a new post on autism and WBT!

Hi Laura! I have 3 students with autism in my class. They respond well to WBT. 2 of them don't do the gestures as fully as the other students but I do have an aide that helps them. I have also paired responsible students with them - students who are understanding of individual differences and are willing to help a fellow student despite their "disability". Sometimes I jump in and we partner as a little group. I do tend to praise them a little more than the rest of the class but I think this has really helped them. The noise level doesn't seem to bother those with autism. I think the fact that we have all learned WBT together this year helped. It wasn't as loud at the beginning as it is at this time of year so it's been a gradual build up. Maybe that has helped them. Good luck!
