I'm not sure if I mentioned already but the No Guff rule is working extremely well. I even had a little guy start to guff and totally back track when he realized what he was doing half way through the guff:) Any other stories?

Hey all,

So I have been using the No Guff rule and it works great! Today I tried the "No Whining/Sniveling" rule. Works the same as Guff but I say, "Is that sniveling I hear?" in a very whiney voice and the class says, "Please Stop!!" Works just as well!

So with it now being second semester, I've started getting a little guff in my room as well. I introduced the Guff counter on Wednesday (I was out at a PBIS workshop yesterday), and it worked great. The kids are real quick to say, "Please stop!" as soon as they hear someone starting to give me any guff.

OH YEAH!!! Guff counter is awesome! With kinders I usually have to say..."sounds like guff"...or "where's my marker"...what is funny is that just today I had a student start to whine about having homework over the weekend...I just quickly turned and walked toward the board and the whole class said "PLEASE STOP"...and one student added...."she's gonna add a page if we get those guff points"

It was amazing!!!

Love it love it love it!!!

So great! I had a few little boys decide they should run around during lunch time when they should have been at their desks eating. One chose to sit down. Afterwards when I heard about the story from the boys, one said, "Johnny made a good choice when he sat down." The practice cards are getting through!

Help Do I call it guff or do I use the other rules. Here is the ? I have 2 or more busy, busy, girls who think they need to tell everyone what to do. This is they think when I am giving directions they must (retell) the directions before I can finish my sentence. I have tried rule #2 and #5. They stop, but then forget.

I know in first grade and kinder it's a big deal to know all the "grown up stuff", but it drive me nuts. Should I call it guff?

Hey Annette,

Sorry I haven't replied sooner. I was just rereading posts and came across this last one. Funny enough I have the same problem with some girls in my own class. First I would try Rule #2 again. I have also started giving out the green practice cards - every time the student follows rule #2 they put a check mark on the back of the card. It has worked remarkably well - they ask for the card or they give it back when they think they have mastered following the rule. If you are at the carpet when this happens you might use the scoreboard and give a frownie or you might give a white practice card. When they are practicing, explain to them how the interrupting bothers you and how it breaks Rule #5 as well. The other thing is that if you explain something follow it immediately with a "Tell your neighbour what I just said" giving the girls the opportunity to tell everyone your directions, yet still within the rules. I would avoid calling it guff because it really isn't talking back:

Great advice Inutini, as always. They have gotten better, but I know we will be back to lot's of practice after our long spring recess (3 weeks). Oh, mighty groan.
