TOPIC: Sight words!!!

Sight words!!! 2 years, 2 months ago #3072

I am a Kindergarten teacher and incorporated WBT with my kindergarten team. They love it and have done some amazing things throughout the year. We really liked the biffytoon idea with the sight words, but there are some word we teach that are not there, so we started coming up with our own gestures. When I initially taught the sight words and gestures, they didn't sink as much as I wanted. So one of my teachers came up with a brilliant idea! She recorded her twins going over the sight words. One of them would hold up the sight word and the other would say the word with the gesture.
My students loved it!!! All of them have learned the sight words with the gesture and the newer ones, that have come in recently, are catching on quickly. I proposed to my principal that he allow us to make a DVD in our school studio and distribute a copy to all of our kindergarteners for them to practice at home. Not only kindergarteners, but any grade level that needs to practice those sight words!

What a great experiance you are having with the sight words. You mention making a video here and I think that you should make one for sure of your class or all of the classes using the Biffytoons.

One of the most effective ways to reach teachers is throught the internet and youtube. So, make a video of you teaching Biffytoons and your class participating. The idea is that a newbie could watch your video and do it in their room the next day. Have a colleague tape you from the side of the room so they can pan from you to the students without too many choppy movements. Once you have what you want, 5-7 minutes, upload with your name on youtube and send me the link.

Some people may ask what's the incentive for making this video, not you of course, just some other people around. One, it helps other teachers reach their kids. Two, we'll give you the link to the Kindergarten Math Power Pix on the download page. The Language Arts Power Pix are there now, but we'll give you the Math ones when we put your video on our website. Three, you kids will love seeing themselves online.

Hi I am not one to use this venue often. How may I get a link to that video? I am a Kindergarten teacher and would love to borrow it.
Thanks

Ms. D
Keep posting it will help us all with learning from each other. The video that we are talking about is in the process of being made...I hope, if she decides to do it.

There are many more videos on our site under the videos tab. Check them out. If you want to make one let me know at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Hello,

We are definitely in the process of making the video in our school studio. The reason it's taken some time is because my school is in the process of using a program called Moodle. This program can be used for various areas such as distance learning. My administrator would like for me to make assignments on Moodle, which I would like to merge with a project I'm doing on Oracle ThinkQuest. I would like to do my project on Whole Brain Teaching. How do I go about getting permission for this project? How do I cite Whole Brain Teaching? What are my restrictions? I can post a link to the whole brain teaching website and our classes using it. We can also show how it is helpful with Language Arts and Math! I'm very excited about this, but it's taking longer than I expected because of the planning aspect. If you all don't mind, I can post the video that my co worker made of her children, at home, and post it on youtube, with her permission. I will then give you all the link.

Here is the link to the uploaded sight words with gestures video. This was inspired by biffytoons. We had to improvise with a few words because there was not a gesture for the word. Either way, the benefits of using gestures with sight words is amazing!!! I taught Kindergarten VE this year and saw tremendous growth in my students, especially in sight words and phonics.
