TOPIC: SuperSpeed Letters

SuperSpeed Letters 2 years, 7 months ago #2603

I have just finished hole punching and putting together SuperSpeed Letters folders for each of my students. I am hoping to begin Monday. As I was compiling them, I wondered about how students mark where they stop when they are partners with another student. Let's say the partners use #1's folder and they go as far as they can in a minute and mark that spot. Do they then use #2's folder (allowing #2 to go first) for the next timed practice? I assume that if they do, #2 will mark in his/her folder. What if #2 goes alot farther than #1? Or is this really a possibility, since weaker students are paired with stronger students? Will the weaker student's performance hold back a stronger student?
Also, I have a question about the Super 100 words. I have made a few copies for students in my class that have already mastered the alphabet, sounds, etc. and are already reading. Who can they pair with? Can they be a partner with a weaker student on the Letters and also be a partner with someone on the 100 words? Thanks for any advice. I am so excited about the possibility of this making a big difference in my classroom.

I'm going to speak to the SuperSpeed 100 question...yes have the kids partner with the other students who know their letters. As the other kids come along they can join in. You are going to have a couple of groups going at once but that is alright...kids are engaged and learning.

Press on because all that you are doing is making a difference.

K...I am trying to envision the folders. They sound very organized and awesome. But if I understand correctly, everyone has a folder? If you are partnering students, they should be sharing a folder. They take turns and after one minute they mark how far they go. Then each time they do the SuperSpeed letters, they try to beat their record. As far as partnering them up, you should have your strong students with your high-average students, and your average students with your low average students. That way the gap is not too big, as would be the case with high--low students.
Yes, your high students could "double" partner--but if you have students who already know the whole alphabet they may get frustrated with their partner if the student is too low. So same as the answer above--try to get someone that is not too far below their own academic level.
Hope that helps:)
