TOPIC: Substitute

How do you leave directions for substitutes to use this effectively in the classroom? How much leeway do they get?

I have placed a quick reference card in my sub folder. It includes the class-yes, scoreboard

File Attachment:

File Name: Whole_Brain_Teaching_Sub_Sheet.doc
File Size: 29184
, hands-eyes, and the rules. I know that is not everything with the program however it does hit the highlights. It is impossible to expect a sub to walk into any classroom and be able to use the management the teacher has 100%. I do think it is important to practice consistency with the kids. Once they are trained in WBT they respond to it so much better than anything else. I am attaching the card I use in case it helps.

I also leave some "notes" to highlight strategies. But of course it's up to the sub if they use them. That's with anything, though. I like the idea of the quick reference guide, as well. Either which way, you will find getting them back in sync the next day is a cinch, using WBT~ no matter how well the sub did!

I don't leave a lot of information for subs, other than for them to say if they need the class's attention to say, "Class?!" and that the kids should reply, "Yes!". Then I just write, "Try it," you'll see. My subs have been very happy.

I was fortunate enough to be able to train all the ‘regular’ subs in my parish this August. I trained them on the Whole Brain Teaching method. These ladies and gentleman will be able to walk into any classroom across the parish and establish his/her procedures promptly and manage the group throughout the day. I whole heartily believe that with WBT in place, a day where a teacher takes off will no longer be a 'dead day.' Using the WBT method, subs can focus on the academics instead of student behavior. I will keep you posted as the year progresses and I follow up with the trained subs. Maybe this is an idea you can toss around in your district!

Thanks,
Alta David
