The Stars are there as a beginning way for kids to chart their progress. Some ages may be excited about coloring them in each time they break their record. Have them write what level they are in and then give it a fancy color.

If you are at an upper grade you may want to do it differently, for instance just use it as a chart to show where they left off. Your reward in the beginning is just the satisfaction of breaking their record. As you progress, you may want to read the ebook on the Power Student Olympics. In that we talk about other types of rewards that you can use. Be creative...but not too spendy!

I was surprised to find out how middle schoolers really enjoyed shading in their stars when they break a record. They get way more excited about SuperSpeed than I expected them to. It just goes to show...they are never too old. Now...to get them excited about Crazy Professor... I'm still working on that...

Jackie, I found that my sixth grade students were "a little too cool" to perform the crazy reading professor game the way it's supposed to be performed. So what I did was allow them to silently read while using gestures. In this way I can still tell that they're actually doing the reading. At the conclusion I have them verbally summarize the story using the gestures they just used while reading along with a partner who is gesturing while questioning and encouraging. Of course, the more enthusiasm the easier it is to gain points on the scoreboard. Hope this helps!
