Hello,
I have tried using the score board in class it was useful for just two days then the kids started getting bored from it they don't even care if I made a happy face or a frowny face which made me disappointed I don't know what to do? is it my problem or my students problem?
Another thing the class - Yes when I say class they started joking while saying yes for example some of them say no instead . What's the ideal action that I should take with such kids?

Hi - for the scoreboard I'm wondering what do you use as an incentive when the smiley face wins, what do you use as a consequence when the sad face wins and how frequent are the rewards?

I NEVER tell my kids WHAT the incentive or reward will be. I often will do daily rewards that also can turn into a bigger reward at the end of the week. The consequence is usually a minute or two off of recess and at the end of the week if sad face won it's homework over the weekend. SO my advice is examine what happens as a result of the scoreboard and also provide plenty of opportunity for kids to earn happy (and even sad) and remember the rule of 3 - winning or losing should not happen by more than 3 points (in order to keep them excited - you wouldn't want to watch a basketball game when someone was winning or losing by 30 points - same here).

For class/yes - use the scoreboard or EVEN individual rewards. Happy when they do it right, sad when they do it wrong, but give the opportunity for them to practice. Call a few kids up to the class to show others how it is done (this is great for your challenging kids too because they become a leader). If they continue to break those rules, keep them from recess/lunch whatever for no more than 2 minutes and during the whole time you continue whatever you'd be doing and have them repeat whichever rule they were breaking (are you familiar with the 5 class rules - or maybe you have your own in place).

Good luck. Keep us updated. Keep the questions coming, that's how we learn. =)

One more thing - with the happy and sad face I try to make it fun. I build up anticipation. I hold the marker up high, I use exagerated expressions. The kids love the one second party and the mighty groan.

Hello-

That definitely can be a frustrating scene.

I'm not sure what grade your students are in. For my middle schoolers I have a 'time bank' in addition to the scoreboard. The number of happy/sad faces is converted into minutes at the end of the period. Students are allowed to "bank in" these minutes of free time on occasion. I keep waiting for the effectivness of this to wear off but only 20 something days left of school and they still quiet down when a sad face is put on the board.

Don't give up! It is worth it!

I also let the kids know if I win on the sad side I get to do what I want, oh boy more math, or no centers and maybe a spelling test, hum let's see what can I do that would make school no fun, no fun at all (do you really want me to win)

I did this only once and it got the point across! Annette

Annette makes a great point!

Just make sure you actually have something for them to do that the teacher 'wants' them to do if you decide to let them lose! Because we all know it is at our discretion...hehe!

Really thank you all jay38 , Annette Warren and Megan Harding I'm going to put all your tips and advices into consideration. One more question If I now decided to put a mark under the frowny face because some of them didn't respond to rules well what about good students so far there are still others who are working hard to stick into rules. And when I give a mark under the frowny face because of the challenging students it will be for the whole class including the good ones
I think this is not fair and it may disappoint them in turn. What's your opinion?

The score board is for the whole class. If all the great suggestions that you have had so far doesn't work for you, you do have the option of going to an independent scoreboard for those who are causing the problems. Have you read the ebook "Teaching Challenging Elementary Students"? Chris has a ton of great suggestions on dealing with those hard to handle kids such as the independent scoreboard, the "Bulls-eye Game", "Practice Cards", and The Agreement Bridge". All of this is a process. He tells you step by step, do this until it doesn't work, then do this. He even has variations to the scoreboard he presented in one of the topics in his web series. There is always more support for you in WBT. Just look through the free downloads.

Best of luck to you. Keep us posted.
