In education, we are continually striving to guide our students into using higher level thinking skills. When I hear that my students are applying these thinking skills into their everyday experiences, I do backflips!
A parent reported that while she was reading with her daughter, the girl stopped and looked at her and proclaimed, "Mom, we could compare and contrast the characters in this story." She proceeded to explain to her mom that "comparing is when we tell how 2 things are the same, and contrasting is telling how 2 things are different", using the WBT gestures as she talked. This parent was so impressed that her daughter was gaining comprehension skills that she could apply while reading.
I teach first grade, and if we can get students to apply WBT skills now, just imagine how successful they can be!
A double back flip for this young student!!!
