I witnessed my student teacher crying last week. Her professor had been in for an hour long observation, and as she re-entered the classroom after de-breifing, tears were welling up in her eyes. During her lesson, the students were testing her, and she needed to use "class-yes" and "hands and eyes" repeatedly, coupled with the scoreboard, to get them ready to settle in and really shine. Can you identify? I wanted to jump in and rescue her, but then, the students began to tune in and participate. She did not give up, continued using WBT strategies, and experienced success. From that point on, they were engaged, animated, and thinking!!! Naturally, I was curious, what did her professor think? Was he critical of her lesson due to the behavior challenges? What could he have said to upset her so? To my delight, the professor was impressed with her consistency, tone of voice, and high expectations, and my student teacher felt like an overcomer because she had met a challenge head on, and didn't give up! She was crying tears of joy! Oh Yeah!
