I got a couple of the WBT Oh Yeah! buttons at the conference in Joplin. I've been using them for a couple of weeks now.

The class voted and chose a student that was responsible and a great example. This new leader is in charge of the class-yes. It is AMAZING! You see...we've been in school for 9 months now. It seems as though the class is starting to tune me out. I'll say "Class, class" and get a meager response. Then I'll point to my leader and everyone heartily joins in! They think it is so cool that they get to respond to the leader. I'm sure there are other great applications for student leaders. Let me know what you have tried!

That is a great idea! Only a month left of school but might have to throw that in there!

This one isn't quite as exciting but I have a student leader from each class 'bank in' any leftover time from their scoreboards (both positive and negative numbers).

I think as many jobs as you can give students the better!

I have several of the WBT buttons and use them daily. I have a Class/Yes leader, a rules leader (for all 5 rules), a Teach/Okay leader, and a mirror leader. However, I pick different leaders daily. Sometimes I even break apart the 5 classroom rules and then that gives more students the opportunity to be leaders in my room. Whenever I need a certain thing, I point to whoever that leader is for the day. If I have a rule 2 leader and the class is talking without permission to speak, they know it is their job and they will simply say, "Rule 2," and the rest of the class says, "Raise your hand for permission to speak," and I didn't even have to do anything. They take it among themselves to control the classroom.

I had a sub on Tuesday and had left her a note in my sub plans on who the leaders were for the day. She left me a note that said, "Their rules and your plans make this "sub" teacher very happy. Rule 5!" I was so ecstatic when I returned on Wednesday that my students earned a point on the scoreboard.

There are also times when I pick my squirreliest student in the room and make them the class leader. You'd be amazed at how closely they pay attention and are on top of things on the days when they are the class leader!
