TOPIC: First day - Short amount of time

First day - Short amount of time 9 months, 2 weeks ago #7209

I'm excited about starting the year off tomorrow with my students, but I have a little problem. I'll only have my students for about 2 hours. I know I need to go over the rules and scoreboard, but what else should I try to squeeze in? I'll lose some of the time to deal with student supplies, so I want to make the most of this first day!

you may want to try and only introduce Class-Yes in such a short time. You are right that a lot of your time will be taken up with other necessities. Up to you.

I think you are right-on with just the class-yes and rules. I feel like no matter how much (or how little) I plan, I can never fit everything in the first week, let alone the first day!

Have a great first day!

How did your first day go? I saw you posted here yesterday and wondered what you did fit in and how the students took to it. I start in two weeks. My fourth graders had me last year, so it will be review for them the first day. My 3rd graders are new so I plan to introduce scoreboard, class yes, and the rules. Since I am learning support, I never know exactly how much time I will bet the first day. Anxious to hear back from you. Ten finger rolling woo for started off you year with WBT!!

Well, it was a fast day! With my first group, I was able to get in class/yes, teach/okay, switch, rules, and lines/seats/"bodies up" along with the scoreboard. I wasn't able to practice the lines with my second group but I'll be able to work on that tomorrow.
I can tell already that my afternoon group is going to be a little more challenging as far as participation goes. A couple of my boys just looked at me like I was a little odd. But it did get better when I hit that scoreboard for not having everyone doing the gestures!
I think tomorrow will be the bigger test since it's a full day and a longer time with each group.

Southern, you can do a tell your partner "if I am gong to participate you gotta participate" (they point to themselves and then point to their neighbor). I borrowed that from Andrea Schindler, I think. Then I would do the quick walk to the scoreboard. Annette
