TOPIC: Homeschooling

Homeschooling 7 months, 3 weeks ago #8402

Has anyone tried the Whole Brain Teaching method in a homeschool environment?

I have two children that are educated at home and I'm really excited about these techniques. I am thinking, though, that many of the classroom management rules wouldn't apply to our situation. What I love most is Teach-Okay. But I also think Class-Yes, Make Smart Choices, and Keep Your Dear Teacher (mom) Happy is wonderful too.

Any feedback would be appreciated. If there aren't fellow homeshcoolers out there, than I guess I'll just have to be the first!

I am not a homeschooler, but working in special education, I have used WBT in both large and small groups. I personally like the enthusiasm of a larger group; however, it does work in small group! The rules are great to use and should work. You can also use the scoreboard to your advantage. Give your kids mighty oh yeahs for staying on task, gesturing, teaching with expression and enthusiasm. Give might groans when they are not on task. They can win small rewards of your choice that works for you. For example, stop two minutes earlier (or latter) for lunch or a break outdoors. You can also try larger rewards for winning the scoreboard all week, then have a field trip to a local museum. Super Speed words and math would also work great as well as the five step lesson planner. Read through the free Ebooks and view the videos. There really is a lot you can do with it. How old are your kids? The closer in age, the easy it might be for them when teaching each other. I think they will enjoy it though. Good luck and keep us posted. I hope this helps.

Thank-you very kindly for your reply, rcrooks.

I imagine the enthusiasm of a larger group WOULD be exhilerating. Unfortunately, I'm unable to experience this...at this time anyway.

My children are 11 and 12 yrs old and, therefore, it should be easy enough for us to do Teach-Okay. In fact, I'm looking forward to that activity in particular.

Again, thank-you for your time.
