Right now I'm substituting while I'm jumping through one last hoop to reapply for my credential. I accidentally stumbled on whole brain teaching and I'm really excited about it. However what I've read/watched so far seems to hinge on the continuity of a regular classroom teacher and incentives/rewards like mind soccer that take place later in the week.

When I walk into a classroom, I have to quickly read the teacher's instructions and then figure out how to implement them (sometimes modifying the implementation based on the situation of the students in front of me), while at the same time learning names, figuring out routines, reading notes, etc.

Are there any specific WBT methods to help substitutes with classroom management?

Thanks for any ideas or directions to any of the existing manuals/videos.

Nimaze,
One of our experts Deb has what she calls a "cheat sheet for WBT". This is what I leave for my subs. If you cannot find it give a shout here and i will see how i can get it to you. Other than establishing the scoreboard, class yes, cheers and one minute rewards or "parties", you don't have the advantage right now to do things over a period of time. That does not mean you can't use WBT to your advantage.

Nimaze,
When subbing, you can easily use Clsas-Yes, Hands and Eyes, and the scoreboard to help with classroom management. If the class has never used WBT, then you can use "tell your neighbor" instead of Teach-Ok. Basically, you are still chunking the lesson, and having students teach their partner, but you aren't calling it "Teach-Okay". By using these basic WBT methods, you can teach whatever lessons the teacher has planned for the day.
I hope this helps!

Nimaze,

The scoreboard would work great in a classroom you are subbing in. Simply draw a smiley and frowny on the board. Tell them that they are working for (extra recess, sitting by a friend, playdough time, etc) at the end of the day. Most classes will work for it. If it seems like a more challenging class, let them know if they loose it may be 1,2, 3 minutes less time of recess or more homework.

Yeah, Scoreboard and Class-Yes are the two best things you can use. I also have the 5 rules laminated with magnet strips on the back so you can just throw them up on a white board. Rule 5 is great for subbing, because if they keep you happy the teacher gets a good report, but if they don't the teacher gets a bad report.
