Hi. I don't know if this is a "correct or acceptable" procedure for some teachers but.... Last year as a tech teacher I used a combo of scoreboard and "no guff" . I was dealing with a lot of "guff" and kept tally marks(happy face/sad face). When "guff" happened, I expected immediate response of "Please stop." from one or more students. If no students responded with "Please stop.", I assigned a tally for sad face. Sometimes I was able to cancel out tallies according to how the session progressed. I sometimes worked through the class ending with one extra tally in the "sad face" side and then I assigned an extra homework assignment (due the next day). This procedure forced all students in the room to work together to solve "guff" issues. It worked very nicely for me and really made students aware of behaviors that they thought were acceptable.
