Rule 5: Keep your dear teacher happy!

Rule 5….amazing! Who would have thought? And GUFF!!!! I have several challenging students and my favorite story is about my argumentative student. I pull rule five and ruff on him sometimes and one day I reminded him about rule five and in his most evil whisper like voice he said “I HATE rule five.”
But then he stopped and went on and did what I asked. Hilarious!

That's the great thing about rule 5! And I even throw in rule 4 at times for similar situations. For instance, if I see a head on a desk and the student isn't paying full attention, I should out, "Rule 5!" and the students respond with, "Keep your dear teacher happy!" Sometimes, however, I yell out, "Rule 4!" just to catch them off guard. When they reply with "Make smart choices!" I ask them if putting their head on their desk is a smart choice. Works like a charm every time!

I love Whole Brain teaching!

I agree, Rule 5 is so powerful in the classroom! Students want to keep their teacher happy. I have a student who is older and a behavior challenge. When his behavior begins to change, I ask him about Rule 5--he stops, smiles and changes his attitude.

Whole Brain teaching gives students responsibility for thier learning/teaching. WBT is the greatest strategies I have ever used in my 19 years of teaching!

I love that Rule 5 diffuses any situation. It is a non-negotiable, but still very silly rule. When I gave that rule on the first day my 7th graders looked so shocked:blink: -like I had totally messed up their world. Now it gives us a chance to laugh off a mistake instead of spending 15 minutes arguing about it.

Will the 7th grade teacher (or other middle school teachers) please add more classroom examples? I've never been so excited to begin a new year. This whole brain approach appears to work wonders.

We use the rule A LOT!!! 7th graders do such silly things that you have to come up with something... reading your book during math class, breaks rule #5

Using innappropriate language - not curse words but words like: shut-up, this sucks, you suck, retard, gay, ect...

Its a catch-all for things that get on my nerves!!
