TOPIC: Reasons to write

Reasons to write 2 years, 12 months ago #1122

People write for one of 3 reasons. (make a large circle with your hands) When you read think of a PIE. I also have a graphic for this lesson on the board. Show the P, I, E, sign language letters to teach Persuade, Inform, and Entertain.

Authors write to
Persuade (Beg)--Hands in praying positon
Inform (Tell)--Cup hands around mouth, as a megaphone
Entertain (Fun)--Splay fingers out with hands on either side of head and waggle hands and head from side to side, clown-like
Compare/Contrast--Hands palm-up alternating going up/down as if they were a scale, then joining hands together

I like your PIE idea!

woo hoo:silly: - I love your teaching posters! Did you develop them yourself?

The kids do like the pie and they draw the pie on tests when they see a question for author's purpose, I am new to Whole Brain Teaching and had not put gestures to it in class as of yet.

Thank you! Yes, I do a lot of Powerpoints...in fact, pretty much one for every reading lesson. The posters are prints of some of the slides I've created. I'm new to WBT, too, but have used a lot of gestures and visuals over the years. One reason I like WBT so much is because it matches what my 28 years of experience in the classroom has taught me. The WBT just organizes it and amps it up a few notches for me.
