Phonics/decoding: point to the palm of the hand, explain that all reading starts here, but if all we do is decode, we can't pick up anything.

Use the four fingers and thumb to represent predict/infer, question, monitor/clarify, summarize, and evaluate; explain that we need all our fingers to catch a ball or pick up something heavy, so we need to use all our reading strategies to read the "heavy" stuff.
