TOPIC: question

question 6 months, 4 weeks ago #8845

I am going to introducing labeling to my kindergarteners (like labeling a picture to give us more information )and I was wondering if anyone has a gesture for labels?

Re: question 6 months, 4 weeks ago #8853

Well, my first graders love to label. Especially when we use the genius ladder. We have just made small square with the thumb and pointer finger, then pointed with one finger. We use the same gesture when we do the date on the calendar in teach/OK.
Does this help at all?

I was hoping you would reply...I have learned so much from reading your posts! So in a longwinded way yes you did help. I can not wait to share this with my class. Is there anything in particular you say when you make the "label" gesture?
Thanks, Georgia

I may have simplified things. I introduced labels with the five step lesson. What is a label? ....then we looked at a simple picture I had drawn and labeled of a tree, house, grass in front (so on). So we did the gesture lable--(make a frame with both hands thumb and pointer). We said "the label makes us able...." We talk about it makes us able to read the description of important parts.
Ta-Da........

Thank you so much for all of your advice...it is exactly what I needed. This was the first time my principal observed me since she hired me and I really wanted to showcase Whole Brain Teaching so she could see how amazing and powerful it is. The lesson was a success and my students understand labels now!
Thank you again, Georgia

Congratulations on showing off WBT to your principal! I had my formal observation today. She had cancelled on me several times already. So naturally, today...Friday before Halloween, right after a tornado drill where the older children had to just drop the guitars and go leaving me about five minutes to put 31 guitars away..she tells me she is coming for 3rd grade, LOL! Thanks to my friend the PE teacher, I managed to be ready.

It went well, but I was still pleasantly surprised to find this sticky on my lesson plan book that said, "ACS is so lucky to have you for our music teacher. I am so impressed how much the students have learned about music while having so much fun." I hope she noticed the WBT techniques and my very prominent WBT bulletin board!
