TOPIC: Any Power Teachers in Canada!!!

Any Power Teachers in Canada!!! 3 years, 1 month ago #698

Hi, I am fairly new to PT and I am currently a substitue teacher. I am wondering if anyone in Canada is using PT. I have recently used it in a few schools that I have been teaching consistently at and they had never heard about PT. I have used PT with classes at a challenging school. I have really noticed a difference in the behaviour of the children. Can't believe it!!! I would love to go and see a Power Teaching classroom, but I leave in Ontario, Canada!

Hi! My name is Liann and I live in Kelowna, BC - I would love to have you see my classroom. I have been at WBT for 5 months or so and love it!!

I teach in Ontario, using WBT. I had tremendous success with Grade 5 the first year I used it, but put less effort into it last year in Grade 7/8. IN the past, I have tried parts of the WBT approach and adapted it to my present practice, but this year I think I'll go more "whole hog".

I am in London, Ontario. Where are you? I am supply teaching this year and hoping to be able to use WBT. Last year I was teaching Kindergarten and used a few things from WBT and loved it! It would be great to hear how things are going this year. I taught Grade 8 my first year.....way back in 95 and wished I knew about WBT. Grade 7/8 is tough!!!

Hi - I'm in Kelowna, BC:) I wish I had known about WBT when I first started teaching:) I have a very challenging class this year and we are only in week one. Things are moving very slowly but there are lots of little successes. Here is a previous post of mine:)

Ok so yesterday was my first day of school and first time using WBT to start the year. Boy was I happy to have it. I have 22 first graders and they are fabulous but very challenging.

So I started out thinking that I would just take it easy the first day and then really get into the rules and everything the next day. Nope - didn't work - change of plans if we were going to get anything done:) I had a kid just walking around anywhere he wanted, several kids calling out until I could barely hear myself speak, kids playing with toys on the carpet, multiple kids wanting to go to the bathroom, kids having paper towel fights in the bathroom and running up and down the stairs screaming, etc.

After about 10 minutes of this, and trying to play some name games and read a story which utterly failed - would not quiet down, I whipped out the scoreboard and started teaching the rules. They were so excited to see it (they had seen it on Looking Ahead Day in June) and immediately there was a change. Before you know it I was ping-ponging Smilies and Frownies like no tomorrow and saying Rule 2, Rule 3, Rule 5. There was smiles, there was laughter - I was having fun and it was working - as the day went on, the child wandering around the classroom was sitting down, children on the carpet were no longer playing with toys, inappropriate and appropriate behaviour in the bathroom was practiced and discussed, etc. By recess we had ping-ponged back and forth till there were 30 Smilies and 31 Frownies!!!! - thank goodness for the portable Scoreboard. The reward, I told them, for making the scorekeeper happy was Center time and I told them to tell their neighbour how much they wanted Center time (I knew how much they wanted to play, especially my more challenging students because they had expressed it while Breaking Rule 2:)). In my head, I was like there is no way I am going to let them earn Center time today unless there is a miraculous turn around. So, much to their dismay, we did not have Centers but I lessened the blow by erasing the Scoreboard after recess and telling them they could begin to earn Smilies and Frownies for tomorrow's Centers. Then I proceeded to go around the classroom and explain all of the amazing Centers. I had their full attention - the whole class - for at least two full minutes without reciting any rules- lol. The best part of all was normally I would be panicking a bit and little more stern at this point but I was still having fun and thinking I was playing a game:)

Anyhow - so then we went to the Assembly... I know - Dun, Dun, Dunnnnnn. They did OK for the first 5 minutes and then everyone started to lose it. I separated kids left right and center, I sat in close proximity to kids, I talked quietly to them. Thank goodness some of the other teachers were helpful. It was a little stressful and I didn't really know what to do - I tried to promise Smilies to a few kids but they pretty much lost them within seconds. Afterwards, I regrouped and made a mental note that for next assembly I would have a class chat and practice good assembly behaviour - they would have a special assembly order and if they were on excellent behaviour they would get Smilies.

Love to hear how WBT works with supply teaching:)

@ Lian - sounds like you're off to a great start! Could you update us on how things are going now?

I'm new to PT, WBT and looking for some examples of how these fit in within the Canadian (or Ontario) school system standards.

As both a parent and an adult educator, I see advantages of using PT/WBT in the classroom.

Hi!

WOW! Things in Grade 1 are going great. Some highlights:

1. Student Leader buttons were a big hit with the kids and they did a great job bringing energy to the class and keeping them engaged!

2. Mind Soccer is a wonderful game that is easy and the kids love it for review of concepts.

3. The Guff Counter is amazing and there is no longer any Guffing conversations.

4. The kids are applying what they know to their math and language arts. They often remind each other of the gestures for addition and subtraction. They can identify the characters, setting and plot in a story.

5. Sockless hand puppets are another great concept teacher and comic relief.

6. Practice cards continue to be doing their thing - I think next on the list to try is the Virtues scoreboard as the unkind words were flying last week.

Overall, it has been a very energetic and fulfilling year so far! I am looking forward to more. The biggest challenge has been maintaining energy and keeping it exciting. I keep turning to the kids and they pull through every time!!

Whole Brain Teaching is fantastic for my classroom and it was easy to apply it to what I was already doing. The Power Pix enhance the concepts/curriculum I was already teaching. Also, Whole Brain Teaching takes care of the classroom management and makes the running of the classroom very smooth. There are very few learning interruptions and the class is held accountable for their behaviour. I hope that helps!

Hi
I am a student teacher in Amherstburg, Ontario and have been using the WBT program since the beginning of my placement. Teacher is amazed and so are several of the other teachers in the school.
Teaching French as a second language and it is a hit with the students. They are speaking and teaching each other and fully engaged. This is my second placement using the system and my first placement was just as successful. That teacher was also excited about the program. Two schools, and two successful experiences with the program. All are very impressed with my skills at classroom behaviour management. Since there are so few interuptions, lots and lots of teaching is going on. After only three days, students began showing evidence of using the strategies we had learned to decode another language, IE: cognates, familiar words, asking questions, listening, looking for non-verbal cues, using voice intonations, using logic etc. After 8 days, they were fully able to verbalize the class rules and gestures, all in french with no cues from me. Classroom teacher was amazed to hear the grade 4s (first year with the language) speaking all in french and without us leading them.
The students are building their own supportive community within the room with the "c'est cool, pas de probleme" cue for those who make a mistake. More are taking risks with their own learning. I love this.
I'm only there for two more days next week, then finished my placement. Hoping to post a video shortly.
Gool luck
