Hi all! I'm a 2nd year teacher struggling (up 'til now) with classroom management.
I teach ELL kinder in a "tough" neighborhood (only elementary school I've ever known to have drive-by drills!). Additionally, I have 3 severely emotionally disturbed students, 2 oppositional/defiant students, and 4 special-ed mainstreamed kids. Out of my 20 students, 4 speak English as a first language, 8 Spanish, and the rest various Asian and Native American languages.
I serendipitously discovered this site over spring break and started with Class-Yes the first day back. The kids ate it up! I've been practicing Power Teaching full bore with my students ever since & other teachers are asking me about the turn-around in my class's behavior.
I've shared this site with 6 others so far, and I share by example. I have the students teach the teachers! Ultimately, I intend to help redesign the school-wide "discipline" plan and train all our teachers in Power Teaching.
Glad to know you all! Lori Flaherty
