People always ask me lots of questions about my math flashcards and how I use it as part of my warm-up for the day. The idea is adapted from the way Jackie Perderson uses her flashcards and daily warm-up - but I have changed it to fit my needs.
Every new math unit there is a certain amount of math vocabulary involved. All of these vocabulary words have gestures connected to them and their defintions. I do not introduce all of the vocabulary up front at the begining of the unit, but rather as it pops up in the lesson plan.
My students have a set of vocabulary cards for their group and after I have introduced the new vocabulary for the day I give them 2-3 minutes to create flashcards for that vocabulary. Vocabulary word on the front, defintion on the back. These are stored in the classroom and they practice the vocabulary, definition and gesture for the first two minutes of every class period. Which gives me time to take attendance, and do other administrative tasks.
It is the 12th week of school and my students have accumulated over 40 flashcards so far, by the end of the year there will be over 100 - because they practice everyday, they are spiraling information everyday, keeping it fresh in their mind.
**Two days a week I also give a rigourus an old state assesment problem to practice problem solving and spiral even more skills.
