Hi WBTers,
I am a first year teacher and I introduced WBT to my class this first week. Almost all of them are LOVING it and responding well to the scoreboard, class-yes, etc. but I have one student who I am having extensive trouble with. He is constantly breaking every rule and distracting the rest of the class during learning. I've had to resort to time out just to keep him from derailing our entire time together (it's been moderately effective, but when he comes back to the group he's the same old troublemaker). I can't find much in WBT that addresses individual behavior issues until the second month of the scoreboard, but I CANNOT live with this for another month. Any suggestions?

Maggie, have you had practice sessions with the entire class on how to do the rules the wrong way....then immediately the right way? My thought is maybe this TM WILL SEE HIMSELF. Another try is sit him next to one of you know the strong little girls who want to boss everyone around and on the QT ask her to be his roll model. Next talk with him one to one and tell him how much you want his help, encourage him to be your first one on the improvers wall. He is seeking attention for a reason, find the source and use positive solutions rather than time out. If possible get mom or dad in the loop of class rules.
I hope something in this long overly word use post helps.

Maggie,

In the conferences and the ebook, and my experience, the scoreboard will get 80-85% of your students OR MORE! Remember that you have a LONG TERM goal. While it can make you want to pull your hair out, that one student now gets to be your project! Read the Ebook, Industrial Strength WBT and start the "class report card" so you will see that even with 1 TM student, the class as a whole is improving as well as you! Now, try putting that one student next to you and make him YOUR partner. Often the TMs are doing it for attention. Also, what Annette said..PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE! Hang in there girl! It is a long year and if you have him on your side and buying in, even if it is the last week of school, you have achieved your goal!
