TOPIC: New to WBT

New to WBT 10 months ago #6788

I just found WBT o You Tube last week and I am looking forward to using it in my second grade class this upcoming school year. I am excited that I found out about this during the summer so I can start at the beginning of the school year. I live in the Guilford County and would love to hear from anyone in the area who is using WBT. If anyone knows of any seminars that are in the North Carolina area I really like to know about it. Also any advice you can give to someone who is new to WBT( teaching for 17 years) is greatly appreciated:)

Welcome to the best help your seconded graders will see from you. Look at the first steps, look at the you tube videos and check here and on the forum for help. We all started some where experienced and not so experienced so we jump in and help each other. Welcome.

Hi Annette
Thanks for your response. Did you find WBT difficult to implement? Since I have not been to any of the training I feel I am starting off cold. The videos are a big help but there is a lot to be said for being at the training. I really do think this will probably be the best year of my teaching career once WBT is effectively incorporated. There is one other teacher at my school who has used WBT this past year so I'm sure she will be big help as well. I plan to start on day 1. How should I anticipate it will take a group of second graders to pick up on the WBT technique?

Everyone who is new has to find their style. It took a bit for me to correct "old" habits. Once I saw the students response I dove right in. I started the summer before school and started here, doing the first steps, downloaded whole brain for challenging kids manual and read and read. I watched videos (Farrah Shipley especially to get timing down and she is so good). I asked questions like you are and learned as much as I can.

It did take some getting used to, but it fits my personality, go,go,go and let's not skip a beat. I have been teaching 35 years + so if this old dog can do it so can you.
You go....Annette

Annette is right, we all have our own style. I began WBT during the second week of school and the kids took to it right away. I still have a lot of old habits to break as well. This will be my 19th year of teaching, but WBT has made all the more exciting. Don't feel like you have to do it all at once. Stay connected with us here on the forum, study the books, watch the videos and check out everyone's blogs. You can do this without attending a conference, but if you get the chance, they are awsome. Keep checking the schedule on the website. If there isn't one offered near you, either have an administrator contact Chris Biffle or watch for live web seminars. Those were very helpful in my first year.

Good luck! Let me know if you have any questions or please share your ideas with us. This is a learning experience for us all!

I put in my two cents as well, but under your other post.

If any of you have any questions, or you would like to come and observe in my classroom you are welcome to do so. I am here to help.
