TOPIC: Not started yet but have questions

Not started yet but have questions 2 years, 9 months ago #2114

First of all, I have been looking at and studying the videos. I am certain I can do it. I even find myself laying in bed and practicing what I need to say before I go to sleep.

This has been work week for teachers. I haven't mentioned that I am power teaching to anyone (I am at a new school and feel kind of lost). However, my next door teacher asked me what my rules were...so, I shared them with her. She liked the rules okay but then asked, "What do you do about tardies? I have a rule for tardies." Then, "What do you do about cell phones? I have a rule for cell phones?" I know I can handle these two issues with Rule 4 and Rule 5. Then she mentioned something. She said, "Don't you have consequences?" Well, I don't have any consequences and don't know what they should be or what they should cover.....I am teaching ESE kids and most of them need very specific instructions/directions.

What is the best way to approach this? Class starts on Monday so if you have an answer please email me directly at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Thanks for help!!!!!

Anita I am in the same boat as you. We start Monday and I've told a few teachers I am teaching with that I am going to do whole brain teaching but I don't know what to do about consequences. If you have any suggestions please let me know or email at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

There are several things you can use for consequences. My first three weeks of school, I didn't even use the scoreboard because they were going along with WBT without it. Try this first. When they seem unmotivated, you can say "okay now we are going to play a game..." and introduce the whole thing.
You can use many things as consequences. I prefer homework because I am usually able to trick them so that they think that they are getting homework for losing the game; even though I was assigning it anyway. If I want them to feel like they won, I will put lots of homework and then let them win and erase it at the end of the period. I usually play this one off like I am upset that they won and didn't have to do the homework.
Other things you can use as rewards is free talk time, choose your own seat for one assignment/activity, bring a snack to class, music for one assignment/activity, etc. If you have a good group, you wont need an actual consequence. They will just work for the reward, and the consequence is not getting the reward. As far as the kids who need further consequence, try the independent group and music appreciation detention. I play German folk music during my detentions.
I would be happy to hear how it goes for you or give you some more ideas as the year goes on.

Good luck!

Doesn't your school have policies in place for cell phones and tardies? This is a huge help because the student is then breaking the school policy, not yours - you are simply enforcing school policy.
