I teach 6th grade social studies and science, and am not sure how I should do power pics. Any ideas? Thanks.

I always say I am no expert, but I'd start with the blank template and then look at some of your standards and start there since your area is so specific. Chime in all this teacher needs our help.

Thanks Annette. If my standard is to understand development of government in various civilizations etc, do I break it down into a question such as how do governments develop? Thanks for your help!

Joybutton,

In New Mexico we are not required to have 30 vocabulary words that are our most important vocab. words. Those are what I use for our word wall (i.e. Power Pixs).

Good Luck!

I teach science and social studies and I am planning on making a few examples and then have the kids make their own. I will try to include Greek and Latin roots as much as possible!

The WBT 5 step lesson format is: 1. Ask the question (How do governments develop?
2. Answer the question (with gestures) Remember, speak briefly.
3. Expand with examples ( a little at a time) You would do a teach/Okay after each of these steps 1-3.
4. Test (Yes/No-Way or Cutie),
5. Critical Thinking. (One example: Have students use a word or phrase you mentioned in the lesson in a sentence, either orally or written.)

That is the way the Power Pix that are available are set up, so I would follow suit doing the same thing. My friend Staci Glass does a Social Studies lesson on the three branches of goverment following this format and has had great success with it.
I'm sure you will come up with a great plan!

Hi!

Also, check out the lesson plans and examples in the Power Pix already available for ideas. Here is a website that teachers at the Phoenix conference shared for finding definitions in kid friendly language:

I like all that I am reading. I want to use WBT at the start of this next year. My main concern: In a subject like social studies, do we get a chance to tackle a subject in-depth when it is so broken up into little chunks? When do discussions take place ?How does it work with kids wanting to ask questions?

I direct teach with WBT hand motions, then they discuss or do assignment with lots of discussion (teach OK), They often generate topic to discuss...or I'll guide them.

I would also recommend the Crazy Professor Reading Game - my 6th graders LOVE IT!

Just wondering if any of you guys have heard about the National Standards that will be coming in about 2 years?!

That could really help us WBT teachers out! I can picture it now... A video presenting Power Pixs for ever grade level and we are all on the same page, from Louisiana to California!

It is coming... Mr. B! Start working on them now... Pleeeeazzzee.

Love it! I just watched a youtube video on the Crazy Professor Reading Game and can't wait to try it!!! I've just started WBT this year. We've had 2 days and so far it's a big success. I also have asked my 2 team teachers to join and they have been willing. What a great world!!

Common Core is right! Here is the website where you can see ELA and Math along with states that have adopted them so far.
