I am an EFL (English as a Foreign Language) teacher. I teach 10 different classes in 4 different grade levels (6th - 9th) and 2 different schools. I began using WBT a few weeks ago. For the most part the results have been very good. However, I have one class that has frustrated me since the beginning of the year - Our school year begins in February - and continues to frustrate all my attempts to teach them - even after implementing WBT. My first class with them is the last period of the day and when I arrive, if they are not already out of the classroom, half the class wants to leave to get a drink and go the bathroom. It takes me ten minutes just to get them back into the classroom and take role. I can't find anything that motivates them - deterents like more homework or staying after school don't fase them, offering them game time doesn't get them excited. I've taught them the class-yes, but they just respond "yes" and continue talking to their neighbor. Even when I can get them be quiet for a few moments, the moment I begin speaking the conversation starts up again. I've tried on two different occasions to introduce the SuperSpeed Numbers game but can't even get started before the period is over. If you have any suggestions I would appreciate it.
I wish I could go to a WBT trainign conference but that is impossible. The webconferences are also not an option right now.

Hi there...I am wondering if you have tried level 1, The Scoreboard. The beauty of the scoreboard is that it rallies the class behind the teacher and gets the majority of students on your side. It sounds like you have a group that likes to talk, so you may wish to having 2 minutes talk time at the end of your lesson if they are the big winners of the scoreboard as a reward. Chunking your lessons (30 seconds to a minute)and having students turn and teach frequently is another way to keep the engagement levels high.
One way way to get your class started is to time them and see if they can beat their own personal class record of getting ready, say under a minute. The time will be determined by you. Just some early suggestions...Good Luck and keep us posted...
