TOPIC: Social Skills - Following Instructions

Social Skills - Following Instructions 2 years, 6 months ago #2834

Hey there fellow WB Teachers...I have found teaching Social skills to students, to be very effective use of time in my classroom while teaching both SPED and GEN. ED.
Here is one social skill that I use frequently. Hope others will find it useful.

Following Instructions:

Step 1: Look at the person.
(gesture - Put hand over eyes as if the shade them. then point to the person
giving the directions.)
Step 2: Say "Okay."
(gesture - Put hand up in the air. Position pointer finger and thumb in a
circle shape and point the other 3 fingers to the sky.)
Step 3: Do the task (instruction).
(gesture - Put one hand out in front of your body. With the other hand place
pointer and middle man on the palm of the other hand.)
Step 4: Check Back (with the person).
(gesture - place pointer finger in the air and trace an invisible check mark).

Good luck and I hope another teacher out there can find these useful, as well!

Thanks Texasgirl for sharing your ideas! Social skills are very important. You deserve a mighty "Oh Yeah!" for coming up with these gestures for your students. I am sure that others will find them useful.

@rcrooks,
Thanks, there are at least 18 more Basic Social Skills that I have skills and gestures for, but I was not sure if they would be useful to anyone else, since, this has been posted for over a year now! If you would like more I can certainly post more with topics such as, Accepting Feedback, Accepting No for an Answer and many more.

Thank you for your feedback!

Sincerely,

Christina,

It would be great to see more if you have them. I have a student with Down's, one with William's Syndrome, and an almost nonverbal autistic student this fall. I may find them very useful. I don't think the problem is that people don't want them. I just feel we need more special education teachers on board. That is a goal of mine this coming school year! Great job!
