I am just starting to use some of the WBT techniques in my intermediate special education classroom. What if you have a student(or two:) who you think might abuse "helpsies?" I have a girl whose first reaction to anything, new or old, is "I can't do it." Next, of course, is "You have to help me." Suggestions?

It is not only special ed kids who will try this. It may take care of it self, one of my first grade little ones does this and her neighbors have said, you need to act like a first grader try it. We encourage helpsies during oral language time and super speed, at their seat during genius ladder adder work ( or how tall is your ladder).
You can always ask that child where they are on the improvers wall, are you trying to show self improvement never give up is one of our motto.
